Fresh, free drinking water right in the heart of town: Following a resolution by the municipal council, the municipality of Winnweiler has installed a new public drinking fountain on the busy market square. With this project, the municipality is responding to the tangible effects of climate change and rising summer temperatures to offer residents and visitors a free way to cool off and refresh themselves in public spaces.
The project was implemented by the Winnweiler Municipal Association. The project is being funded as part of the state program “100 Drinking Water Wells for Rhineland-Palatinate” by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, and Mobility, with a grant of 8,000 euros allocated for water management measures.
The fountain is a model manufactured by Plasson made of sturdy stainless steel. It was installed in accordance with the strict requirements of the Drinking Water Ordinance and offers the highest level of hygienic protection.
An internal, automatic flushing system with temperature monitoring ensures impeccable water quality at all times. A drinking water test was successfully conducted prior to approval.
The fountain operates off the grid using solar power. During the summer months, it provides a refreshing source of water, while in the winter months it is taken down to protect it from frost.
A drinking water well is already in operation in the municipality of Gonbach, and another one is being planned in the municipality of Lohnsfeld.
